CHAPTER 21

It wasn’t long before the four of us had taken up position on Uncle Alec’s windowsill, and since the Chief likes to leave his window open to let some fresh air into his office, it was the perfect vantage point for us to listen in on whatever was being said inside. There have been times when the Chief has invited us into his office, but that was only when Odelia put some pressure on him, and he never let a chance go by to express his dislike of this accommodation.

And since Odelia was probably at the office, we decided to use a more circuitous route to glean information straight from the Chief’s lips and to our ears.

“So Otto Schoenburg,” Chase was saying. “According to Wilbur Vickery, he’s some kind of local crime boss?”

Uncle Alec drummed his fingers on his desk and finally nodded. “He is, though as far as I know, he retired years ago. So if what you’re saying is true, he’s active again. How sure are you that it was Otto’s guy who tried to run you over?”

“Well, pretty sure, considering Wilbur saw the whole thing and told me as much. He even gave me the footage.” He showed the video on his phone, and the Chief must not have liked what he saw, for his face clouded.

“That’s Quickie,” he said. “Otto’s right-hand man. Or at least he used to be. After Otto retired, Quickie became more of an odd-jobs man. Running errands and the like. But if he’s the one who tried to mow you down…”

“Yeah, pity that part isn’t visible on CCTV. Though I’m sure if we ask around, other shopkeepers will be able to supply their CCTV, and if we’re lucky, we might catch the whole thing on video. We might even get the murder of Rupert Collier on video.”

“Okay, so who is Rupert Collier?”

“I first ran into Rupert about ten years ago,” said Chase, leaning back. “Back when I was a lowly beat cop in Brooklyn. He was just a local lowlife, always up to no good. Sticking up convenience stores, stealing cars, petty theft. So we picked him up a couple of times, and he did time. And then I was promoted and we didn’t cross paths again.”

“Until now.”

“Yeah, until now.”

“So what was the name of this girl he mentioned?”

“Florrie. No last name. I checked, and the only Florrie I can find is a Florrie Bulloch. So I’ve sent two uniforms to pay her a visit. If what Rupert told me is true, her life is in danger from the same people who targeted him. Unfortunately, he collapsed before he could tell me more.”

“So what’s the link between this Florrie Bulloch—if she’s the Florrie Collier was referring to—and Otto Schoenburg, you think?”

“No idea. Unlike Rupert, Miss Bulloch doesn’t have a criminal record. So if she’s involved with Schoenburg, she was never picked up for anything.”

Uncle Alec leaned back and put his hands behind his head. “So what’s all this I hear about
